Duty Roster

South Gippsland Yacht Club runs on the energy of its volunteers. All racing members share responsibility for race day duties throughout the season. The duty roster is published at the start of each season and covers four key roles for each race day.

Officer of the Day (OOD)

The Officer of the Day is responsible for running racing on the day. This includes setting the course, managing the start sequence, monitoring safety on the water, recording finishing positions, and making any decisions on race abandonment or course changes due to weather. The OOD should arrive at least 30 minutes before the first race to set up and brief the team. A race management guide is available from the Race Captain.

Rescue Boat Officer

The Rescue Boat Officer operates the club's safety boat on the water during all racing. You are responsible for monitoring all sailors, assisting with capsizes and breakdowns, and being ready to respond to any emergency. You must hold a current boat licence and be familiar with the club's safety procedures. The rescue boat should be launched and on the water before the first start.

Tower Support

Tower Support is responsible for operating the race recording system from the tower during racing. This includes logging sail numbers, recording finish times, and assisting the OOD with course signals and flag displays. No prior experience is needed, as full training is provided on the day.

Kitchen Support

Kitchen and Yard Support helps keep the club running on race days. This includes setting up the barbecue or preparing lunches, keeping the kitchen clean, making sure tea and coffee are available, and tidying the yard and rigging area at the end of the day. This is a great role for social members, partners, and anyone who wants to contribute without needing to be on the water.

Your Responsibilities

All members are expected to assist with race day duties when rostered. If you are unable to attend your rostered duty, please arrange a swap with another member as soon as possible and notify the Race Captain at racing@sgyc.com.au.
